Mr. Newton Maharjan

Educational background

Mr. Maharjan holds a Master’s degree in Engineering from Tongji University, specializing in Structural engineering. His thesis focused on the nonlinear response study of structures using vertical and three-dimensional isolation systems. Before his master’s, he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at Kathmandu Engineering College.

Work experience

Mr. Maharjan has significant experience as a Structural Engineer, currently working at Hydro Tunnelling & Research Pvt. Ltd. since November 2019. His responsibilities include the structural analysis and design of critical components for hydro power projects, such as waterways, hydro structures (intake, undersluice, gravel trap, settling basin), underground structures, and powerhouse structures (including control buildings, loading bays). He also works on designing switchyards and transmission/substation elements like generator foundations and tower foundations. Additionally, Newton produces structural drawings, performs foundation analysis, and conducts preliminary sizing of structures.

He plays a key role in the rehabilitation and retrofitting of existing hydro power and powerhouse structures and ensures that in-situ construction aligns with designed structures, applying necessary modifications when required. Newton has led the design of several major hydropower projects in HTR, including the Nilgiri-II Hydropower Project (71 MW), Khimti-II Hydropower Project (48.8 MW), Langtang Hydropower Project (20 MW), Middle Mewa Hydropower Project (73.5 MW), United Mewa Hydropower Project (50 MW), Super Lower Bagmati Hydropower Project (41.86 MW), and Bagmati Small Hydropower Project (33 MW).
